5 Credit Tips to Build (or Rebuild)

If there is one thing we can all relate to it’s that at some point in our lives we had no credit. From that time, we go in all sorts of directions. Some avoid using credit because they don’t want to spend money that they don’t have. Some have been able to build good credit by borrowing and paying back on schedule. But many have experienced a different journey. Some went crazy with credit cards in their youth, not realizing the importance of having to pay them off. Some hit a bump in the road and struggled paying bills, causing their credit to take a dip. Others co-signed for someone else who fell short of paying on time and now they are left with a busted up credit score. No matter where your credit journey has brought you, these 5 simple steps can help you build (or rebuild) your credit so that it is working FOR you instead of against you.

  1. Pay All Bills On Time

Why: Your payment history is the most important part of your credit score.

Tip: Set up autopay or calendar reminders to avoid late payments on credit cards, loans, utilities, and even rent.

  1. Apply for a Secured Credit Card or Credit-Builder Loan

Why: These tools help you build a positive credit history, especially if you have little or damaged credit.

Tip: Make small purchases and pay them off in full each month.

  1. Keep Available Credit Use Low

Why: Using less than 30% of your available credit shows you’re managing credit responsibly.

Tip: If your limit is $1,000, try to keep your balance under $300.

  1. Check Your Credit Reports for Errors

Why: Mistakes can unfairly lower your score.

Tip: Go to AnnualCreditReport.com to check your reports for free and dispute any errors.

  1. Limit New Credit Applications

Why: Too many credit inquiries in a short time can lower your score.

Tip: Only apply for credit when necessary, and space out applications.
